I have been planning to eat at this place for quite sometime out of curiosity and of course to try out fresh seafood at low prices (yes I am cheap). Fortunately, I was able to bring a willing Dutch victim/tourist to try out the place. This place actually shares the same roof with the wet market so you could imagine the scent that one has to disregard while eating. At least, it didn’t bother me or my guest. So what did I order? I actually copied what someone ordered in a food blog — hehe, just wanted to play safe. I ordered 1/2 kilo of shrimp tempura and 1/2 kilo of lapulapu in a chinese sauce (forgot which one but it was sweet and gingery). Normally, I would be the one buying it from the market stalls but this time I was too tired so I let them do it all for me. Not sure if my guest liked it but it turns out the 1/2 kilo shrimp was too much for 2 people but the whole fish was just enough (only bones were left). I ordered 4 cups of rice which was also too much I ended up wrapping the tempura — to go along with the rice. The total of the bill was around 700 PHP including 2 cans of sprite. Not bad for a cheap eat! Although I was tempted to order crab I tried to stop myself and just wait until I find another willing victim next time. And next time, I will try another restaurant because the service at Aling Cadiang’s was really really slow I had to remind them to serve us the drinks!

Last year, I posted this article: A Dutch Cafe in Manila

Since then, we have visited this place about two to three times already. Most of the time with our Dutch business partner. He likes this place a lot. I couldn’t agree more. For one, according to them, and also I agree with this that the Bitterballen (beef filled crunchy balls) they serve here is much better than the ones we have eaten in the Netherlands. They serve exotic beers from countries like Belgium, and Germany. Last time we went there, we gave our Team a treat. Our business partner ordered the Duvel beer for each of them and gave a small lesson on good European beers. I ordered a girly beer called Kriek, it’s a pink beer and it’s cherry flavoured I think. Then they also tried a darker beer which is called Leffe Bruin. Later, the owner served us Jägermeister, pronounced /YAY-gur-MAIST-ur on the house. It was a strong German alcoholic drink. Tasted like a very strong cough syrup. But I think it was a mixture of exotic herbs.

When you enter the cafe it feels like you are really back in Amsterdam. It has the typical look which is characterized by cozy ambience, dark wood surroundings and old world furnishing. Service is pretty good but at that time we were the only once in there. The Cafe is in Ermita. I hope they would stay in business for a long long time.
